Patterns are <em>cool<\/em>. Patterns apply to people, and groups, and organizations, and&#8230;everything, actually. (L: I could talk about patterns for hours, but I won&#8217;t.\u00a0<em>You&#8217;re welcome<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we&#8217;ve each mentored people into <strong>technical leadership<\/strong> and tried to understand how\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grow as their <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leadership role and ability<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grows,\u00a0we noticed a pattern with several distinct steps. Because <em>patterns are cool<\/em>, and because we learn by writing and talking, we put words to the pattern we were seeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Before we get too far in, let&#8217;s define\u00a0<em>technical leadership<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Technical leadership is providing knowledge, guidance, support, and strategy to developers, systems, and especially the intersection of the two.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To be clear, it is\u00a0<em>not<\/em> project management (although sometimes that&#8217;s included) or people\/HR management (although sometimes those roles are combined too).<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re going to break down what we&#8217;ve seen with some diagrams and then some explanation of what each stage looks like. We&#8217;ll split the explanation into two posts, because there&#8217;s a lot to talk about.\u00a0<em>This <strong>was<\/strong> the reasonable-length version, we promise.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The Progression &#8211; the Diagrams<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2280 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/soul-repairs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/technical-leadership-01-people.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soul-repairs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/technical-leadership-01-people.png 568w, https:\/\/soul-repairs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/technical-leadership-01-people-300x104.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As people gain knowledge in Technical Things, that knowledge tends to reflect these levels &#8211; self (as in, &#8220;my tasks&#8221;), single team and system, multi-team\/multi-system, and finally, the enterprise\/company as a whole.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2281 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/soul-repairs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/technical-leadership-02-awarenessownership.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soul-repairs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/technical-leadership-02-awarenessownership.png 367w, https:\/\/soul-repairs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/technical-leadership-02-awarenessownership-300x195.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People\u00a0<em>also<\/em> tend to move from <strong>awareness<\/strong> of something &#8211; for instance, awareness that their team could use their help on something outside of their usual duties &#8211; to\u00a0<strong>ownership<\/strong> of it &#8211; like, deciding in their soul places to help their team be awesome.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>However,\u00a0<em>fun fact<\/em>, the basic pattern we noticed was that people move across these <strong>at the same time<\/strong>. Eventually they move toward accepting\u00a0ownership\u00a0of their team, etc (don&#8217;t worry, we&#8217;re going to explain these in detail!). As people progress through technical leadership, they do&#8230;well, this.\u00a0\u261d\u00a0Self-awareness to enterprise ownership.<\/p>\n<h2>The Progression &#8211; the Stages<\/h2>\n<h3>Self -&gt; Awareness<\/h3>\n<p>Ever worked with a baby programmer, or remember when you <em>were<\/em> a baby programmer? Someone brand new, out of school, who hasn&#8217;t quite figured out how to like&#8230; <em>understand things and also\u00a0<\/em><em>talk to people<\/em>? Or, <em>cooperate on a professional team?\u00a0<\/em>Yeah. Mastering the basics is vital to all that comes after it. <em>Also to adulting well,\u00a0<\/em>which is another skill baby programmers usually need to learn.<\/p>\n<h3>Self -&gt; Ownership<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The true first step to being a technical leader is to build a reputation for being reliable in the eyes of your team &#8211; and that means\u00a0<\/span><b>executing <em>your<\/em> development tasks well<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A wise person once told Josh, &#8220;be good where you are.&#8221; Get things done on time, ask amazing questions, and learn to love and understand the system you&#8217;re wrangling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there&#8217;s success here, more challenging and complicated work <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soul-repairs.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/22\/building-reliability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be offered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333;\">Also, interesting to note, most technical leaders never get entirely away from this step or the next. Solid technical skill (and troubleshooting,\u00a0<em>spoiler alert<\/em>)\u00a0<em>always<\/em> help a technical leader.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Single Team &amp; System -&gt; Awareness<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This stage starts at <em>troubleshooter<\/em> &#8211; building a\u00a0track record for <\/span><b>solving tricky problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means taking on more frustrating and painful tasks than you strictly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to, and getting good at different kinds of problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, this is getting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really good<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at understanding the neuroses of a system, learning how to debug and fix it efficiently and effectively. It also requires a massive dose of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soul-repairs.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/10\/the-five-most-important-ingredients-in-doing-technical-stuff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stubbornly not quitting<\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The better someone is at troubleshooting, the more likely that they&#8217;ll become the Help, I am Stuck and\u00a0 You Know Stuff<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>person &#8211; dedicating resources to helping\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This shift<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0means <\/span><b>all kinds of patience <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;\u00a0with technology, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with people. A lot of great technical people draw the line here, mostly because&#8230;well, they don&#8217;t enjoy people very much. That&#8217;s fine, people are a lot of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This step is where people typically stop doing as much of their\u00a0<em>own<\/em> implementation &#8211; and that can be really frustrating for people who go into IT to write code. Instead of finding joy in implementation, though, they learn to\u00a0<strong>find<\/strong>\u00a0<b>joy in other people&#8217;s successes<\/b>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, a lot of people draw the line here because they<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0love implementing technical solutions, so please stop talking to them and let them code stuff.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Next up&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>In part 2, we&#8217;ll talk about growing into taking ownership of the team&#8217;s success, and move on to awareness and ownership of multiple teams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We like patterns.
